Too many people, not enough management: A look at the chaos of 'overtourism' in the summer of 2024
SINTRA, Portugal (AP) — To be visited during the summer of “overtourism” in 2024 means traffic jams, water problems and high housing prices. It's the first year in which tourism is expected to beat records set before the coronavirus pandemic. Despite well-publicized protests and some drunken tourist behavior, residents and analysts don't necessarily blame the travelers. They say it's more a matter of crowd and economic management. Many hotspots have responded. Portugal has limited its residence-by-investment visa program. Lisbon is curbing tuk-tuk scooters. Amsterdam has broadened its “Stay Away” campaign. Japan put up a screen to stop people from flooding a parking lot to take selfies of Mount Fuji.

What is 'price gouging' and why is VP Harris proposing to ban it?
Vice President Kamala Harris has proposed a ban on “price gouging” by food suppliers and grocery stores, as part of a broader agenda aimed at lowering the cost of housing, medicine, and food. The proposal, introduced Friday, is an attempt to tackle a clear vulnerability of Harris’ head-on: Under the Biden-Harris administration, grocery prices have shot up 21%, part of an inflation surge that has raised overall costs about 19% and soured many Americans on the economy, even as unemployment fell to historic lows. Wages have also risen sharply since the pandemic, and have outpaced prices for more than a year. Still, surveys find Americans continue to struggle with higher costs.
Harris to meet with Teamsters, but union president isn't invited to speak at Democratic convention
DETROIT (AP) — Teamsters union members will host Vice President Kamala Harris for a roundtable discussion in the near future. But the union's president, Sean O'Brien, has yet to get an invitation to speak at next week’s Democratic National Convention. Kara Deniz, a spokeswoman for the 1.3 million member union, told the Associated Press in an email Friday that the Teamsters are working with the Harris campaign on dates for the roundtable. But she says O’Brien has not received a reply to his request to speak at the Democratic convention. O'Brien angered some Democrats by speaking at the GOP convention last month.

Possible work stoppage at Canada's two largest railroads could disrupt US supply chain next week
DETROIT (AP) — Canada’s two largest railroads are starting to shut down their shipping networks as a labor dispute with the Teamsters union threatens to cause lockouts or strikes that would disrupt cross-border trade with the U.S. Both the Canadian Pacific Kansas City and Canadian National railroads have stopped taking certain shipments of hazardous materials and refrigerated products. They are threatening to lock out Teamsters Canada workers starting Thursday if deals are not reached. Canadian Pacific Kansas City says that on Tuesday it will stop all shipments that start in Canada and all shipments originating in the U.S. that are headed for Canada. A long work stoppage could cause significant supply chain disruptions.
Trump zigzags between economic remarks and personal insults at rally in critical Pennsylvania
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — Former President Donald Trump has repeatedly swerved from a message focused on the economy into non-sequiturs and personal attacks, including thrice declaring that he was better looking than Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump, on Saturday, wound back and forth between hitting his points on economic policy and delivering a smattering of insults and impressions of President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron at a rally in northeastern Pennsylvania. Trump’s rally was in a swath of the pivotal battleground state where he hopes conservative, white working-class voters near Biden’s hometown will boost the Republican’s chances of winning back the White House.
Harris campaign reserves $370M in ads after Labor Day, including battleground state push
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign says it is reserving $370 million in advertising to run between Labor Day and Election Day. In a memo Saturday, the Harris-Walz campaign said the fall advertising push will include $170 million in television reservations running for nine weeks, starting Sept. 3, in battleground states. It also includes more than $200 million in digital reservations on platforms such as Hulu, Roku and YouTube. That does not include spending on ads on social media or search services. Former President Donald Trump’s campaign has only reserved advertising time after Labor Day in two states, the battlegrounds of Pennsylvania and Georgia, according to data from the media tracking firm AdImpact.
Looking to buy a home? You may now need to factor in the cost of your agent's commission
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Thinking of buying a home with the help of a real estate agent? You can no longer take it for granted that a seller will cover the cost of your agent’s commission. Home sellers have traditionally offered a blanket commission to a buyer’s agent when they listed their home on the market. But that will no longer be allowed as of this weekend, when various changes to U.S. real estate industry practices are set to take effect. A homebuyer may still try to negotiate such an offer from the seller. But if they decline, that would leave the homebuyer on the hook for paying for their agent’s services.
