The artificial islands were made with the very same sand that was drained from the bay to permit the passage of large ships. Up until the 20th century, the maximum depth of the bay was a mere 4 meters.
The Most Famous Islands
The most famous artificial islands in Biscayne Bay are Star Island, Hibiscus Island, and Palm Island. On these three landmasses, you can find the mansions and yachts of Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, Shakira, and many others.
To tour the area there are two basic options:
Boat: There are several companies that do cruises around Biscayne Bay. All of the companies tour the islands by sea and explain anecdotes about the area and the celebrities who live or have lived in the various mansions.
Car: The three islands are connected to the MacArthur Causeway, the famouselevated roadway that connects Miami Downtown andSouth Beach.
Seeing the mansions from the water is undoubtedly the best way to experience the bay, therefore we recommend one of the following two tours:
Venetian Causeway
Another of the arteries between Miami and Miami Beach is the Venerian Causeway. This toll road cuts across the Venetian Islands, and other popular artificial islands where various celebrities live. It's well worth a look.
