I know there are some variations on the Lego trains, but will they "sit" on traditional O-gauge track? Do they have the same outside rail dimensions? I think I might add this one to my layout as a static piece parked on a siding. I see the power functions can be added. It's funny reading the reviews as they mostly talk about wheel slip when adding the power. One reader caught on to add a rubber band to the wheel, what we here call a "traction tire". Thanks

The short answer is no. You could modify the LEGO rolling stock and fit them with O gauge trucks but a locomotive would be more of a challenge. The set your looking at would still make a cool looking display piece for Christmas. You could paint the LEGO track to make it look a little better than just all black.

Here is a Lego Scooby Doo Mystery Machine I adapted to a E-Z Street chassis which is O scale compatible. Lots of Dremeling and super glue. "Lego" scale (whatever that is) is a little big for O scale so I needed to size down vertically and horizonally. Unclepeterr

LEGO gauge (L gauge in the LEGO train world.) is wider than O, so LEGO trains will not fit on O gauge track. And due to the way they are built, you could not regauge L to O, unless you are comfortable taking a sander to your LEGO pieces. But they are still fun to play with.

I have mounted Lego cars on O gauge trucks, but the problem comes in when dealing with engine. The Lego system is all metric and comes out about 2 mm bigger than O gauge. (not exact difference, just an eyeball observation.) It would take some significant work to change the gauge and still use all Lego parts. I am fairly positive it could be done, just never had the time to work out.

Lego trains have a following all there own. Some of the rolling stock and locomotives are amazing. Below are some pictures I took of a display by PennLUG at the York Greensburg Show in 2013.

We discovered that the buildings were the perfect size for an O-Gauge Layout or Train Garden and that the Little LEGO People can do some amazing things with engines, cars and accessories. Here are some ideas for you to study.

Are all LEGO train tracks compatible? ›

There's some compatibility between all the LEGO® train tracks. Over the years, we've never changed the width of the train tracks. The train cars from all earlier models will run on the new track and connect to the new trains.

What gauge is the LEGO train? ›

Lego trains use a nominal gauge of 37.5 mm ( 1+15⁄32 in), based on 5-stud track centerlines gauge. This is circa 5.5 mm wider than O gauge (30 mm [1.181 in] – 33 mm [1.3 in]). The 37.5 mm length is not derived by a certain scale ratio.

Are all O gauge trains the same? ›

First thing: Scale and gauge are two different things entirely. All O gauge equipment runs on track 1.25" in gauge, but not all of the equipment is the same size... O scale (1:48): Pretty simple and straightforward.

Are Lego trains too small? ›

Practically all the trains LEGO has released are built to a vehicle gauge that is 6 studs wide (barring the odd handrail perhaps). They've done this since they first introduced trains into the LEGO world, whereas their cars have inexplicably doubled in size over the years.

Which is better, O gauge or HO gauge? ›

O scale is obviously a much larger commitment—HO scale is half the size, and is one of the most popular scales due to its relatively easy entry point. Smaller scales, therefore, can be ideal for beginners, but larger scales allow you to create much more detail and realism in your layouts.

Can O gauge trains run on 027 track? ›

A: O and O-27 use the same width straight track so O-27 trains can run on O Gauge track and in some cases O Gauge trains can run on O-27 track. The primary difference between the track from an appearance standpoint is the height of O Gauge track compared to that of O-27.
