F. Hamlets that would become Oklahoma City, Guthrie, Stillwater and Norman were born in an afternoon. Their town lots were claimed between noon and sunset, April 22, 1889, during the Oklahoma Territory's first land run. H. Many of the land-seekers were victims of the Great Plains' prolonged drought, which had wiped out their farmsteads.
In the Oklahoma Territory they saw a chance to start anew. To the remnants of the 56 tribes whose Indian Territory comprised nearly all of what was to become the Oklahoma Territory, and in 1907 the state of Oklahoma, the land openings had a far different meaning. The Indian Territory had been established by Congress in 1834. The government planned to move as many tribes as possible to the territory in particular, the Southern states' "Five Civilized the Creeks, Chicka91 1. Choctaws, Seminoles and They were forced, sometimes i in chains, from their ancestral lands to Indian Territory.
The Cherokees were granted 7 million acres in the forested northeastern corner of the new Indian Territory. Additionally, the tribe received a strip of land extending nearly 100 miles westward, just below the Kansas border. Called the Cherokee Strip or Cherokee Outlet, it afforded the Cherokee access to more westerly hunting grounds. But as landless settlers pressed west, pressure grew to declare thinly 7. populated areas of Indian Territory surplus.
Surplus lands, purchased by the government from tribal owners, would be thrown open to settlement. Oklahoma's first land rush of 1889 was on unassigned land a buge block just below the Cherokee Strip not previously assigned to any tribe. Its opening paved the way for the biggest, most violent land run of them all that of the Cherokee Strip itself. Cherokee Strip Museum preserves the history and flavor, as well as the pathos, of Oklahoma's biggest land run; Perry was a stopover for many of the run's participants. On the museum's five acres is a fully one-room schoolhouse built in 31895.
Nearby are exhibited farm tools used by, the strip's early sod-busters.
